Spring turkey harvest down slightly from 2008

Illinois turkey hunters harvested 15,488 turkeys during the
recently-completed 2009 spring season, according to DNR. The total
is down a bit from the 15,792 taken last spring.

North Zone hunters took 9,135 birds, down from the 2008 total of
9,505. The top North Zone counties were: JoDaviess 612, Pike 549,
Adams 421, Fulton 417 and Macoupin 351.

South Zone hunters harvested 6,353 turkeys, an increase from the
6,287 taken in 2008. The top five South Zone counties were:
Jefferson 363, Randolph 352, Pope 332, Marion 329 and Wayne
325.

The all-time Illinois record turkey harvest was in 2006, when
hunters shot 16,605 bearded birds—10,075 in the North Zone and
6,530 in the South Zone.
