Northern Lower

Baldwin Area

Steelhead fishing has been good in the Pere Marquette River. The
best action has been on spawn, wax worms, egg flies, and stone fly
nymphs. Inland lake fishing has been slow to get started. The
spring turkey season should be a good one, with lots of birds in
the area. Toms are gobbling.

East Jordan Area

Fishing has been slow around East Jordan, and fishing pressure
has been light. A few steelhead have been caught in the Boyne
River, but the Jordan River hasn’t seen many fish. There is still
ice on Lake Charlevoix, but not enough for foot traffic. Turkeys
are breaking out of their winter flocks, and toms are talking.

Traverse City Area

Steelhead fishing has been excellent on the Betsie River. Wax
worms and spawn are producing the best results. Steelhead fishing
has been slow on the Boardman and Elk rivers. There was still ice
on most inland lakes, but not enough for foot traffic. Turkey
hunting should be good.

Wellston Area

Steelhead fishing has been pretty good on the Manistee and
Little Manistee rivers, where water temperatures are in the low
40s. Spawn, wigglers, and wax worms are catching fish, and fly
fishers are enjoying success on egg patterns. There is open water
on most of the inland lakes, but fishing pressure has been
light.

Cadillac Area

There was still ice on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell last week but
nothing safe for foot traffic or ice fishing. Turkeys are on the
move.

Houghton Lake Area

Fishing has come to a halt on Houghton Lake where anglers are
waiting for the ice to melt and the lake to open up. Turkey hunting
should be decent with fair numbers of birds in the area.

Higgins Lake Area

There was still some ice on Higgins Lake last week, but nothing
safe enough for ice fishing. Anglers are waiting for open
water.

Oscoda Area

Steelhead fishing has been pretty good in the lower stretch of
the AuSable River. Those fishing with spawn, wax worms, and
wigglers all report good success. The water is high, and the water
temperature is about 42 degrees. A few walleyes are hitting off the
pier on Lake Huron. Crankbaits are producing the best results.
There was still a little ice on inland lakes, and fishing has
stalled there. There are lots of turkeys in the area. Birds are
breaking out of their winter flocks.

Hillman Area

Ice was falling apart on area lakes last week, creating
dangerous conditions. With more warm weather in the forecast, there
wasn’t expected to be any safe ice by this week. Turkeys are just
breaking out of their winter flocks.
