Spring Turkey Hunt Opportunity for Youth
Meeker, Colo. – Thanks to support from private landowners, the
Colorado Division of Wildlife Hunter Outreach Program is offering
three youth hunters the opportunity to participate in a premier,
private land spring turkey hunt near Meeker, Colorado. The hunt
will take place on April 25 and 26, 2009.
Youth interested in participating in this extraordinary
opportunity can apply by sending a letter of interest and a short
essay about hunting to District Wildlife Manager Bailey Franklin at
PO Box 1181, Meeker, CO 81641. The letter of interest should
include the hunter’s name, address, phone number and hunter
education card number as well as contact information for a parent
or guardian. The essay should be 500 words or less and should
express why the youth believes hunting is important for wildlife
and why the youth wants to be selected to participate in this
special spring turkey hunt.
Applicants must be under age 18 and possess a valid hunter
safety card. No previous hunting experience is required and all
youth hunters are encouraged to apply. However, youth that are
interested in the sport of hunting but that have not ever been able
to go hunting, for whatever reason (family, health, financial,
etc.), will have preference over those youth that have already had
opportunities to hunt.
Successful applicants and a parent, guardian or mentor must
attend a pre-hunt orientation at the Meeker CDOW office from 3-5
p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009. CDOW will provide use of shotguns,
ammunition, blinds and calls. Hunters must provide their own
camouflage, lodging and food.
Letters and essays must be postmarked by April 10, 2009. The
three youth chosen to participate in the turkey hunt will be
notified by April 15, 2009.
