Grand Rapids, Minn. Hides for Habitat, a recycling program designed and conducted by the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, generates habitat funding from deer hides. In 2002, MDHA collected more than 52,000 hides at an average value of $4.50 per hide.

MDHA offers the following tips: Pull hides, do not cut them; pulled hides provide higher returns than cut hides. Remove the hide quickly, as they’re more easily removed when the carcass is fresh and preferably warm. Hides need not be fleshed or scraped; do not include heads, feet, or lower legs with your hide donation. […]
