Madison, Wis. Turkey hunters in Wisconsin this year set a harvest record of 42,237 birds, an increase of 7 percent over the 2002 spring harvest of 39,336. Hunters took advantage of an expanding turkey population and increased number of permits.

Wisconsin DNR upland game ecologist Keith Warnke said hunter success has been “pretty stable” around 25 percent, but the turkey range has continued to grow. Turkeys were reintroduced to Wisconsin in 1976; the population had grown to about 200,000 by 2000. The 2003 spring season set a high mark for hunter safety, Wisconsin officials said.

The hunting season previously had been scheduled to open on Sept. 1, 2001, but was halted by an injunction issued by Judge Daniel Moser. The appeals court subsequently removed the injunction allowing the season to open this year. It’s not likely that the Supreme Court will issue a decision until after this fall’s dove hunt,

Columbia, Mo. Outdoor photographer/writer Bill Marchel of Fort Ripley, Minn., received national recognition by winning five photography awards at the 2003 annual conference of the Outdoor Writers Association of America held June 14-18 in Columbia, Mo.

Marchel won first place awards in the Conservation/Environment category and the Fishing category. In addition, he won a second place award in the Small Game Hunting category and two third place awards in the Fauna category and the Flora category.
