Des Moines The estimated Iowa pheasant harvest in 2001 set a new record low. Pheasant hunters killed an estimated 470,000 roosters, 53-percent fewer than 2000 when more than 1 million birds were taken. The previous low was 1984, when hunters took 724,000

The 2001 season followed the third snowiest winter on record,
and then a cool, wet spring. The weather factors combined with a
big decline in Conservation Reserve Program acres. The harvest also
was below estimates made by Iowa DNR officials in August and likely
was due in part to a 27-percent decline in hunter numbers. Iowa had
about 23,000 nonresident pheasant hunters, down from about 50,000
in 1997.
