Algoma, Wis. Dr. Marc Noakes, Visiting Research Fellow for the
School of Biological Sciences at Washington State University in
Vancouver, has confirmed John Nusbaum’s Aug. 24 charter catch off
Algoma as a pinook salmon a natural cross between a pink salmon and
a chinook.
Noakes and his colleagues determined this by DNA sequencing of
the fish’s heart, which was sent in by DNR biologist Paul Peeters,
of Sturgeon Bay.
Peeters said he’ll now submit the record fish application form
for a Wisconsin state record pinook. Nusbaum’s state-record fish
weighed 8.34 pounds.
