Madison, Wis. The deer herd estimate in Wisconsin is lower than last year. But not by much.

State DNR biologists estimate the deer herd in that state to be
about 1.6 million, down from an estimated 1.7 million last year.
During the 2000 archery, rifle, and muzzleloader seasons, hunters
harvested 615,293 deer.

The number of Zone T Deer Management Units where hunters may
harvest buck or doe has decreased from 90 units to 76 this year,
although hunter’s choice permits are available in the other DMUs.
Hunters must apply for hunter’s choice tags in non-Zone T units by
July 20.
