To reduce harvest and enhance walleye populations on Rainy Lake,
all walleyes 17 to 28 inches long must be released, with only one
over 28 inches allowed in a daily and possession limit of 12
walleyes and sauger, of which only six may be walleyes. Beginning
March 1, 2002, the possession limit for walleye and sauger in any
combination will be reduced to four on Rainy Lake.
A new lake sturgeon regulation also took effect on Minnesota’s
portion of Canada-Minnesota border waters on March 1, 2001. An
angler may now catch and keep one sturgeon per license year, and
all sturgeon less than 45 inches or more than 55 inches must be
released. The season will be open from July 1 through April 30; it
will be closed May 1 through June 30 to protect spawning fish.
