What is the Outdoor News Foundation?
The Outdoor News Foundation aims to give back to and bolster the American conservation community while building the next generation of hunters, anglers, and conservation leaders. Why does this matter? Because many youth from the next generation lack the exposure and education needed build their bond with our natural world and sporting heritage.
Your generous donations power this effort, directly benefiting young people through:
- Environmental Scholarships: Cultivating future outdoors journalists, fish and wildlife biologist, and other stewards of our natural world
- Youth Grants: Empowering hands-on outdoor experiences and skills development at environmental learning camps
- Free Access to Outdoor News: Inspiring young minds with knowledge and access to sporting culture
Examples are all around us, but recently a resource professional shared their story. He grew up lower middle class near downtown Chicago in tenement housing with little access to the outdoors. So how did he eventually become a natural resources manager for a federal agency?
Because his dad brought him hunting. Twice each autumn, his dad brought both himself and his brother pheasant hunting in rural Illinois. Those experiences imbued deeply-rooted core memories, on his boys, and as he aged he elected to focus his education on the sciences and eventually landed a scholarship to the University of Illinois. There he majored in Fish and Wildlife management, and after a serving in the military, he joined a federal natural resource agency. Later, he raised a family of hunters and anglers, some of whom have gone onto natural resources careers of their own. Collectively they’ve supported a laundry list of outdoors groups and environmental projects.
An entire clan of outdoorsmen and women began simply because a father thought it was important to occasionally take his son hunting. At the Outdoor News Foundation, we believe there are thousands of potentially similar stories, but someone needs to make that initial connection.
We see it as our responsibility to connect those kids to the outdoors via access to the hunting and fishing culture that Outdoor News delivers every day. We’ll connect kids to hand’s-on, in-depth environmental learning centers, and we’ll help educate them in natural resources professions.
Make your mark. Whether you’re donating on behalf of yourself, or in memoriam of a lost loved one who cherished the outdoors, every little bit matters. Donate now and help us forge a lasting legacy for the outdoor community.
Together we can turn the tide.
