On-Air with Ron Schara this Saturday

Minnesota Bound’s Ron Schara called and interviewed me this morning for a news segment that will appear on his WCCO Radio show Saturday morning. We chatted briefly about what’s cooking in the state Legislature this spring. Despite a $5 billion budget deficit, legislators still find time for bills on fish hatcheries, pike slots limits, dove hunting, or live coyote transport….

Missing Tony Dean today

A friend in conservation sent me the press release below to note the appointment of the new NRCS chief. I’ve spent some time trying to research Mr. White and generally am developing a semi-positive vibe about the man. He has strong credentials and experience, and Sen. Tom Harkin praised White’s efforts working on the conservation title of the past two…

LOHC bill authors named

The bills that carry the recommendations of the Lessard Outdoor Heritage Council have been introduced. In the House, it’s HF 2131 and the author is Rick Hansen, DFL-South St. Paul. Co-authors include Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher and Majority Leader Tony Sertich. In the Senate, both Ellen Anderson, DFL-St. Paul, and Satveer Chaudhary, DFL-Fridley, introduced the exact same…

Visiting brother, enjoying Atlantic Coast of North Carolina

Spent several days last week along the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina while visiting my brother. He’s a Marine Corps pilot and officer at Camp LeJeune and bound for Afghanistan next month. Though I’ve spent a fair amount of time along both coasts, this was my first visit to the Carolinas, and their famed Outer Banks. The marine and fishing…

Habitat funding recommendations

The Lessard Outdoor Heritage Council made its final picks for year one of dedicated funding. It’s a nearly $69 million package that includes 18 on-the-ground habitat projects and that funds a program to distribute small grants to sporting groups and other local organizations. The council passed the measure on an 11-1 vote and will formally send it to the Legislature…

MCF donates $5,000 for south-metro WMA

The Minnesota Conservation Federation recently gave a check for $5,000 to the Minnesota DNR for the Vermillion Wildlife Management Area complex in Dakota County. The organization gave the DNR the check during a quarterly board meeting held at the Eden Prairie Gander Mountain store. I attended and witnessed some grassroots conservation firsthand. MCF President Steve Maurice presented the check to Tim…

Keep the pressure on

It was good to see the Star Tribune editorial this morning that dealt with the Lessard Outdoor Heritage Council. While the newspaper opposed dedicated funding to begin with, it’s good to see its defense of the council now in the matter of metro versus rural spending. As has been reported, the council made preliminary recommendations for about $68 million worth…

2009 Outdoor News Man of the Year

Outdoor News subscribers can read today about our 2009 Man of the Year: Garry Leaf. He’s our 11th Man of the Year since we started the award in 1999 (Joe Duggan was the first recipient), and Garry is arguably the most surprising pick we’ve ever made. Most folks who have won this award (10 men, one woman) received it as…

Lee and Tiffany Lakosky visit Minnesota Deer Classic this weekend

An outdoors feature in today’s Star Tribune profiled Lee and Tiffany Lakosky, of The Outdoor Channel’s “Getting Close with Lee and Tiffany.” Story didn’t mention it, but Outdoor News helped Tiffany achieve some measure of her initial hunting publicity through our annual Best Buck Contest. Looking through archives this morning, I see the former Tiffany Profant was a weekly winner…
