St. Lawrence River: Ice fishing options abound now, and anglers are hitting the traditional hot spots such as Lake of the Isles, Eel Bay, Goose Bay and Chippewa Bay. Use big minnows for northern pike, fatheads or spikes while jigging for perch. Reports have been mixed as far as the quality of the fishing; many anglers say they have to sort through plenty of small perch.
Black Lake: Richard at Chapman’s Sports in Hammond reports plenty of ice, with about 8-10 inches of snow on top. Travel is good if you’re on a snow machine or ATV and aren’t trying to pull anything behind it. Anglers were connecting on a few good walleye, decent numbers of northern pike and plenty of panfish, although many – notably the crappie – were running on the small side.
