Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report - May 9th, 2013

Traverse City Area

The walleye bite is improving on South Lake Leelanau. Jigs and minnows are producing good results when fished in 6 to 8 feet of water. Perch fishing has been good on Big Glenn Lake in 65 feet of water. Minnows and wigglers have produced fish. A few decent pike have been caught on Green Lake. The fish are still in the shallows and are hitting body baits and spoons. Turkey hunting has been fair. Toms are strutting and hens are nesting in the afternoons. Black morels are being found.

Grayling Area

The AuSable and Manistee rivers were still high and dirty last week, but a fair number of browns have been caught. Hatches were just getting started. Bluegills were moving into the canals on local lakes. Turkey season got off to a good start. There are lots of birds in Crawford County.

Higgins Lake Area

Higgins Lake has finally opened up. The docks are in and a few people  were starting to get their boats out last week. Some were trolling for lake trout and rainbows, while others were still-fishing for perch in 20 to 25 feet of water. Turkey hunting has been fair.

Onaway Area

Brook trout fishing has been outstanding on the Black River, and good numbers of steelhead are being caught on the Ocqueoc River. Brookies are hitting flies and worms, and the steelhead have been caught on flies and wax worms. Walleye anglers report a good bite in the shallows on Black Lake. Turkey hunting has been pretty good. A few morels have been found.

Oscoda Area

Walleye fishing has been good off the pier on Lake Huron. Steelhead fishing remains good in the AuSable River from Foote Dam to the mouth.  Flies and wax worms have both produced good results. Crappies have moved into the shallows on Van Etten Lake. Turkey hunting has been good.

Hillman Area

Walleye fishing has been decent on Hubbard Lake, and panfish and bass are hitting on Fletcher Pond. Bluegill fishing has been good on Grass Lake. Turkey hunting has been slow.
