South Central Pennsylvania Fishing Report - January 3rd, 2014

Weather conditions varied among regions and fisheries through mid-December. Ice angling was just beginning on a couple of fisheries in the northern corners of the state as of Dec. 19. For ice-fishing safety tips, go to www.fishandboat.com. Winter trout stockings were in progress during December in a limited number of fisheries across the state. For a schedule, visit www.fishandboat.com. Boaters are reminded that life jackets are mandatory when on watercraft less than 16 feet in length and on all canoes and kayaks through April 30.

 

Little Juniata River (Huntingdon, Blair counties) — Low, clear but fishable conditions were reported Dec. 19. Water was in the upper 30s. TCO Fly Shop reported trout were moving into their wintering holding lies, and suggested targeting the deeper pools.

Juniata River (Juniata County) —Walleyes were reported on jigs and twister tails or jerkbaits for the few anglers who fished in cold weather and rainfall in early December.

Lake Marburg (Adams, York counties) — Nice largemouth bass and yellow perch were reported at the second bridge through early December.

Yellow Breeches Creek (Cumberland County) — Anglers were catching trout on Green Weenies and scuds in the “catch-and-release” section through early December.

Susquehanna River (Cumberland County) — Anglers were catching a few walleyes on shiners and other live baits around York Haven hydro-dam as conditions allowed through early December.

Susquehanna River (Dauphin County) — A few walleyes were reported on minnows, crawlers, or jigs and twisters or jigs and live baits around Middletown as conditions allowed through early December.

Holman Lake (Perry County) — Some panfish were reported on small jigs and twister tails, waxworms, or small minnows on this Little Buffalo State Park lake through early December.

Susquehanna River (York County) — Walleye fishing was productive on jigs and minnows or jigs and twister tails, with bright colors effective, through early December. Flathead and channel catfish were reported on crawlers and chicken livers.
