Southwest Pennsylvania Fishing Report - January 31st, 2013

Youghiogheny River (Fayette, Somerset counties)

The tailrace of the Youghiogheny River Reservoir was yielding trout in recent weeks, with crawlers the most productive live bait. A state trout stocking is slated for Feb. 5.

Virgin Run Dam, Dunlap Creek Dam (Fayette County)

A state trout stocking is slated for Feb. 5.

Beaver, Ohio rivers (Beaver, Allegheny counties)

Anglers were catching walleyes, with nice sizes reported below the Townsend, Montgomery, and Dashields dams. Live baits and twister tails in chartreuse and white were the ticket.  Drift-fishing live bait on or just above the bottom can be productive.

Bradys Run Lake (Beaver County)

A state trout stocking was slated for Jan. 23.

High Point Lake (Somerset County)

Ice anglers landed largemouth bass up to 21 inches, walleyes up to 23 inches, a 27-inch northern pike and bluegills and perch in early January on this impoundment in the mountains of Somerset County. Shiners and jigs were taking the bass, pike and panfish.

Cranberry Glade Lake (Somerset County)

A couple of northern pike around 30 inches were released by ice anglers on Jan. 5.

Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County)

The Green Bridge area was yielding northern pike. A walleye was reported below the reservoir in Quemahoning Creek.

Laurel Hill Lake (Somerset County)

Trout were reported in the open water at the top end of the lake, which is slated for a stocking on Feb. 6.

Lake Somerset (Somerset County)

Poor ice conditions put the kibosh on fishing in mid-January.

Ben’s Creek (Somerset County)

A few rainbow trout were reported in recent weeks.

Glendale Lake (Cambria County)

Anglers were icing northern pike, pickerel, bass and a few walleyes in a couple of the coves in early January. The best pike was 39 inches in length.

Duman Dam (Cambria County)

Anglers were icing pickerel and brown trout in early January.

Allegheny River (Allegheny County)

Anglers targeting the  mouth of Deer Creek caught a few smallmouth bass and walleyes.

Keystone, Northmoreland lakes (Westmoreland County)

State trout stockings are slated for Feb. 5.
