Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report - January 31st, 2013

Posted on January 31, 2013

Lake St. Clair

First ice was forming all over again on Lake St. Clair last week and anglers were starting to get out. Bluegills and perch were hitting at Lake St. Clair Metropark, but that was about the only safe ice at that time. Anglers should be aware of wind conditions, which can push ice out into the middle of the lake.

Lake Orion

Inland lakes were making ice all last week. Anglers reported pretty good success for panfish on Graham, Orion, and Lakeville lakes. Fair numbers of pike were caught on tip-ups. Rabbit and squirrel hunting has been fair at Bald Mountain Recreation Area.

Luna Pier Area

Anglers were catching good numbers of perch last week in Lake Erie at Lake Erie Metro Park and the Banana Dike. Ice was safe for foot traffic, but not snowmobiles or ATVs yet. A couple anglers reported catching steelhead in the Huron River.

South Haven

There was up to 4 inches of ice on local lakes in Allegan and Van Buren counties last week. Bluegills and crappies were hitting on Lake of the Woods and Munson lakes. There was up to two feet of snow on the ground. Coyote hunting is heating up and bunnies are on the run.

Sturgis Area

Ice was forming last week on Klinger Lake and anglers were walking out to their spots. Decent numbers of panfish were being caught on wax worms and minnows. Coyote hunting is improving now that there is snow on the ground.
Klinger Lake Trading Post, (269) 651-2679.

Kalamazoo Area

The panfish bite was pretty good last week in the big bay on Gull Lake. Safe ice was still forming in the main lake. Steelhead fishing has been slow in the St. Joe River due to high, dirty water. Whitefish were still being caught in Lake Michigan on salmon eggs and wax worms fished off the pier at St. Joe. Walleye action has been good in the Kalamazoo River below the Allegan Dam. Crankbaits were taking walleyes up to 12 pounds. There also have been some steelhead hitting below the dam. Spawn and yarn eggs were working the best.
