Southern Illinois Fishing Report - January 25th, 2013
Crab Orchard Lake
Crab Orchard has been muddy and levels have fluctuated. Crappie fishing is fair on minnows. Bass action has picked up, but still slow near shorelines. Bluegills are being caught on worms.
Warm-water areas good for catfish, though those being caught are small. Anglers are tossing crankbaits around rip rap and catching a few bass. Bluegills are slow but will hit on meal worms or wax worms occasionally.
Channel cats are good on the lake for anglers drifting or jug fishing with cut bait or leeches. Crappies good below the dam.
Muskies are being caught on spinnerbaits and shallow running baits. Catfish and bluegill action has been slow. However, bass anglers are reporting good success on spinnerbaits.
Crappies are still rated good on minnows, chartreuse jigs, white jigs and pink/green jigs. Best fishing sets are in 7-10 feet of water, though fish are also biting in 8-9 feet of water near the docks and bridges. Fish are also being caught over Christmas tree sets and near bridge pillars in 6-10 feet of water.
