North Central Pennsylvania Fishing Report - January 31st, 2013

Posted on January 31, 2013

Spring Creek (Centre County)

Above-average flow was reported Jan. 16, making for tough fishing. Water was in the 50s and off-color from snow melt and rainfall. Streamers, and egg and crawler patterns were good bets. Midges (22-26) and small Blue-Winged Olives (20-22) were hatching. TCO Fly Shop recommended tan and olive Bird of Prey Caddis (14-16), brown Zebra Midges (18-22), Green Weenies (12-14) and other basic patterns.

Penns Creek (Union County)

Flow was high and off-color from snowmelt and rainfall. TCO Fly Shop recommended streamers and large stonefly nymphs for when water began to drop to more fishable levels. In addition to working streamers along the bank, dry dropper techniques with Caddis dry flies and basic fall nymphs, such as Green Weenies (12-14), Pheasant Tails, and olive, tan, and green Caddis larvae were recommended. Hatches included a few midges and Blue-Winged Olives. Productive patterns included Prince Nymphs (12), Green Caddis larvae (14-18), olive, brown, white and black Slump Busters, and brown, white and black Zuddlers.

Rose Valley Lake (Lycoming County)

Some nice smallmouth bass around 16-plus inches and chain pickerel up to 23 inches were reported on live bait in early to mid-January.

Big Fishing Creek (Clinton County)

Snow melt had flow running above average and off-color at times in January, and water was about 40 degrees as of Jan. 16. Trout were in the slow deep pools they seek in winter. A good streamer bite was reported by TCO Fly Shop, along with micro-nymphs on light tippet. Hatches included black midges (24), cream midges (24), and Blue-Winged Olives (20-24).
