You know Pennsylvania, ranks high for hunting and fishing

Posted on February 25, 2013

Jeff MulhollemState-specific information from two national reports released at the Shot Show in January on the economic impact of hunting and fishing recently became available. You may find the statistics for Pennsylvania interesting.

Pennsylvania was not rated as highly as I expected for hunting and fishing activity, according to "Hunting in America: An Economic Force for Conservation," sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, and "America's Sporting Heritage, Fueling the American Economy," sponsored by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation.

The reports stated that in Pennsylvania, 1,424,000 hunters and anglers spent $1.5 billion in 2011. Those sportsmen, both residents and nonresidents, almost equal the population of the city of Philadelphia (1.42 million vs. 1.5 million).

According to the reports, there are more resident sportsmen and women in Pennsylvania then the combined total home attendance for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2011 (1.28 million vs.1.06 million).

Sportsmen and women spent $1.5 billion on hunting and fishing in Pennsylvania in 2011 – that is more than the combined receipts for corn and cattle, the state's second and third agricultural commodities that year ($1.5 billion vs. $1.23 billion). The report claims that hunters and anglers support roughly the same number of jobs in Pennsylvania as Penn State University, the third largest employer in the state (24,797 vs. 25,000).

Spending by sportsmen and women in Pennsylvania generated $181 million in state and local taxes in 2011, the reports stated. That's enough to support the average salaries of 3,238 police and sheriff's patrol officers.

The estimated 1.1 million anglers and 775,000 hunters in Pennsylvania in 2011 (both residents and nonresidents) spent $1.5 billion, according to the reports, and supported 24,797 jobs in the state.

The Keystone State ranks 10th in hunting and fishing participation, 23rd in the amount of money they spend, 20th in the number of jobs hunting and fishing supports, 19th in the amounts of wages earned by those in hunting- and fishing-related jobs, and 14th in the amount of taxes paid as a result of hunting and fishing activity.

I was surprised Pennsylvania didn’t rank higher.

Interesting, and a bit surprising. Guessing maybe thats because of states having high dollar trophy hunting/fishing that adds up faster than a whole bunch of your average joes hunting on the back 40, or fishing at the local lake or river for 13" bass & channel cat.

Because of deer management in Pennsylvania, hunters are hunting less and spending less on it. It would have been interesting to see how our spending compared to other states 20 years ago.

I used to spend 3 times as much money per year on hunting and hunting related expenditures back when we had a good deer herd.

I guess glorifying some total whacko nutcase enviromaniac who hated hunters and hunting is better than paying any attention whatsoever to those of those that pay for their very jobs! Go figure.

Rachel Carsons infamous quote, really big hit on all the antihunter websites:

“Until we have the courage to recognize cruelty for what it is—whether its victim is human or animal—we cannot expect things to be much better in this world. We cannot have peace among men whose hearts delight in killing any living creature. By every act that glorifies or even tolerates such moronic delight in killing we set back the progress of humanity.”

I guess Director of ed. Joe Neville thinks shes a great role model for anyone coming to the facebook page.

Whoever is responsible for that should be fired. But they will probably get an employee of the month award instead, and a plaque from audubon.

I agree. People that think its in any way "OK" promote antihunters should NOT be permitted to work in the agency that runs hunting in this state. I'm absolutely disgusted that to hunt, I have to pay people like this' income. Absolutely sickening. Btw, still there at one week now. Where are the "hunter advocates" at now? Figured they wouldn't come to the rescue and made them take it down by now? lmao.
