Southern Wisconsin Fishing Report - December 28th, 2012

Posted on December 27, 2012

BIG GREEN LAKE AREA

There was no ice on Big Green Lake, not even in the backwaters that had had ice earlier. There were some boats out the past few days, as anglers looked for walleyes. The cisco spawn should kick in this week. Even the smaller lakes aren’t frozen yet.
North Bay Sport & Liquor, (920) 294-6462.

LAKE MICHIGAN/METRO AREA LAKES

In Milwaukee, anglers were catching brown trout, perch, and a few steelhead by jigging or live bait rigging near the Summerfest grounds and marinas. Trollers were using crankbaits in the top 20 feet while fishing out to 70 feet of water. On the Milwaukee River, browns and steelhead were in deeper holes. There have been quite a few anglers out fishing, mostly for brown trout and yellow perch, with the most action coming in the area around the Hoan Bridge. The inland lakes were just starting to skim over with some ice last week.
Port Washington anglers were catching a few trout and salmon near the power plant.
In Racine, fishing action was steady, with browns hitting in the lower section of the Root River and in the marina area. Spawn and minnows were the best baits. A few pike were caught on shiners in the same areas.

MADISON AREA

Water temperatures are getting down there, but there was no ice to speak of last week. There has not been a lot of activity on the Madison chain, but a few guys were catching a few walleyes around the shorelines on Lake Monona and Lake Mendota. They also were catching crappies at night out from the convention center. Muskie fishermen were having some action on Monona on smaller suckers. They also had a few fish following jerkbaits. Most of the action was on the west side of Monona. There have been a lot of boats on the ramps on Lake Waubesa, but there have not been a lot of reports of fish coming in. Anglers have had some luck fishing for walleyes on the Wisconsin River at Wisconsin Dells.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN AREA

There is no ice in the area. A few people are fishing near the Lansing, Iowa, area with hovercrafts. The walleye and sauger fishing has been fair near the Lynxville dam, where anglers are fishing from the float and from boats.
Stark’s Sport Shop, (608) 326-2478.

SAUK CITY AREA

There was no ice in the area as of Dec. 17. It’s a little too early yet for ice fishing. There was a little bit of open-water fishing going on, mostly for walleyes and sauger on Lake Wisconsin.
