Southern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report - August 2nd, 2013, 2013

Lake St. Clair

The smallmouth bass bite has been red hot on Lake St. Clair. Anglers drifting with golden shiners and casting tubes and spinners are catching lots of fish in front of the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club, off 11 Mile Road, and off 12 Mile Road. Good numbers of big rock bass, sheepshead, and perch up to 10 inches also have been caught. Walleye fishing has been good in the middle of lake near the St. Clair light.

Irish Hills Area

Walleye fishing has been good on Sand, Wamplers, and Vineyard lakes. Crawlers and leeches fished in 10 to 12 feet of water have produced good results. The best action has been between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. Pike fishing has been pretty good on Vineyard. Anglers are catching pike on spinners and spoons fished along the weedbeds. Bass fishing has been good on most lakes in the area, including Vineyard and Wolf. The bluegill bite has been good on Wamplers and Norville lakes. Fish the structure with leaf worms and wax worms.

Edwardsburg Area

Lake of the Woods, Juno, Painter, Christiana, and Diamond lakes have been producing a good bass bite. Topwater baits have been hot early and late, and soft plastics and crawlers have produced at midday. Look on the deep side of the weedbeds. A few walleyes and lots of panfish have been caught on Lake of the Woods. Bluegill action has been good on Donnell, Juno, Diamond, and most of the local lakes in the area. The fish are suspended over deep water and are hitting red wigglers and crickets.

Allegan Area

Skamania steelhead fishing has been good in the Kalamazoo River. Flies fished at the mouth of Swan Creek have produced the best results. Salmon fishing has been slow on Lake Michigan. A few fish have been caught in 60 to 120 feet of water. Perch fishing has been very good in 18 to 32 feet of water. Bluegills are hitting on Duck Lake, and Great Bear Lake.

Kalamazoo Area

Fair numbers of salmon and steelhead are being caught in Lake Michigan by anglers trolling in 140 to 200 feet of water between St. Joe and South Haven. Spoons, flies, and meat rigs are catching fish. The perch bite is heating up on Lake Michigan with fish up to 15 inches being caught. Anglers fishing out of South Haven are catching fish a mile north of the pier in 35 to 45 feet of water and south of the pier in 28 to 40 feet of water. Muskie fishing has been good on Thornapple Lake with one angler landing a 48-incher. Bluegill fishermen are finding that fish are moving deeper and into the weeds. A good bite has been reported on most lakes in the area, including School Section, Cora, Duck, Eagle, Harwood, Three Mile, and Little Fish. Anglers trolling for crappies are doing well on Portage Lake, with slider grubs taking specks up to 15 inches. Bass fishing has been good on Upper Crooked, Maple, Scott, Swan, and Sand lakes, and the Kalamazoo River. The best action has come early in the mornings and later in the evenings.
