Northern Lower Peninsula Fishing Report - August 16th, 2013

Baldwin Area

Good numbers of salmon have moved into the Little Manistee River, but action has been slow on the Pere Marquette River. A few brown trout and steelhead have been caught on hoppers and nightcrawlers. Bluegill action has been slow, but bass fishing has been hot on Wolf, Idlewild, and Big Bass lakes. A few perch have been caught in Big Bass, too.

East Jordan Area

Panfish action has been pretty good along the weeds in the Chain of Lakes. The walleye bite has been good in the south arm of Lake Charlevoix. Anglers fishing nightcrawler harnesses in weedbeds in 15 to 18 feet of water report good action. Bass fishing has been good all over Lake Charlevoix, with spinnerbaits and leeches fished under slip bobbers both producing good results.

Manistee Area

The salmon bite remains slow in Lake Michigan at Manistee. Anglers are trolling spoons along the shelf and out to 200 feet of water, 60 feet down and above. A fair number of lake trout have been caught, including several that were pushing 30 pounds. Bass fishing has been very good in Manistee Lake. Some anglers believe it’s the best year ever. Bluegill and pike fishing have been good in Manistee Lake, too.

Cadillac Area

Fishing has been fair on lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. Bass fishing has been good on both lakes, with some nice-sized smallies being caught. Walleye fishing has been slow, but the crappie bite has improved. The best spec action has come to anglers fishing minnows at the east end of Lake Cadillac in 13 feet of water. A lot of small pike have been caught on both lakes.

Hubbard Lake Area

Fishing has been very good on Hubbard Lake. Walleyes are hitting  crawlers, leeches, and jigs fished in 40 to 50 feet of water, 30 to 33 feet down. Smallmouth bass are hitting spinnerbaits and nightcrawlers fished in 3 to 10 feet of water. Perch are hitting red worms in 10 to 12 feet of water along the weedbeds.

Alpena Area

Fishing has been fair on Lake Huron. A few walleyes have been caught off the pier, and boat anglers are catching light numbers of salmon and lake trout. Bass fishing has been good in the Thunder Bay River.
