Northeast Minnesota Fishing Report - August 23rd, 2013

ELY AREA

The current area between Lake Three and Lake Four is producing walleyes in eight feet. White Iron Lake is producing small walleyes and bluegills are hitting on Grassy Lake, Little Long Lake, and Low Lake in less than six feet. Look for northern pike on the weedlines of Lake Shagawa and Farm Lake. Crankbaits thrown on the shorelines of most lakes will produce smallmouth bass.

GRAND MARAIS AREA

Rapalas are producing walleyes during the evening hours in 12 to 15 feet at East Twin Lake, six to eight feet at Elbow Lake, 15 to 20 feet at Devil Fish Lake, and in 12 feet at Cascade Lake. Lake trout are suspended and hitting spoons or bucktail jigs over 70 feet at Lake Saganaga, 60 to 80 feet on Greenwood Lake, or tight to the bottom over 45 to 55 feet at Daniels Lake. Fly fishing during low-light periods has turned rainbow trout at Esther Lake, while crawlers are working best for rainbows at Trout Lake and Leo Lake in 15 to 20 feet. Anglers are catching king salmon on Lake Superior with Dipsey Divers in less than 100 feet and smallmouth bass remain active on most lakes with Hungry Jack producing good-sized smallies.
