Lake Ontario and tributaries: Small boats were starting to pound the shoreline for brown trout. Wes Walker at The Slippery Sinker reports several boats have been out pulling stick baits and casting spoons in tight to the shoreline and off the pier heads to take trout. Some fish are also being caught off the piers and there are still fish up at Burt Dam. Perch were starting to hit in the harbors of Wilson and Olcott, along with a few other panfish. Many of the other tributaries held fish in the deeper holes if you want to try and target them. Use egg sacs, egg imitations or single egg presentations. Jean’s in Wilson is sponsoring a Spring Bullhead Contest April 5-6.
Lake Erie and tributaries
The tributary run of trout is on. Target the medium to large streams like Cattaraugus Creek for the best runs of fish. Egg sacs or egg pattern flies top a long list of preferred baits. Other good streams to target include Chautauqua, Canadaway, Eighteenmile, Buffalo and Cayuga creeks. There was a good trout bite off the Dunkirk City pier recently on spoons. Fishing a minnow or grub under a float with also work for you.
Upper Niagara River
With the arrival of spring, look to places like Bird Island Pier, Broderick Park and the northern section of Squaw Island for trout. There has been some activity above the upper rapids in Niagara Falls, too. Use egg sacs or minnows under a float or cast hardware like spoons or spinners. Emerald shiners are the perfect bait for perch in the marinas this time of year throughout the upper river.
Lower Niagara River
Action for trout continued to be consistent both from boat and shore, but you have to work for them. You do have some hurdles to overcome, such as wind and cold temperatures. Hopefully that will start to change soon with the arrival of spring. Minnows and Kwikfish-type baits will work for you, depending on wind direction. Boat control is a key to your success, paying attention to how three-way rigs work the bottom. Shore fishermen casting spoons, spinners or jigs could have the advantage. Egg presentations fished under a float could also be successful.
Nothing to report with ice now unsafe.
The tributary conditions within Orleans County have flows at low to moderate levels with almost clear water clarity. There are still some active steelhead/rainbow trout being taken in the tribs. On Oak Orchard River, perch fishing has been fairly active from the bridges area all the way to the point. Brown trout are being taken by those casting spoons and plugs from the jetties and, when weather conditions are favorable, from small boats trolling along the shoreline. A sure sign of the Lake Ontario fishing season will take place on April 6 – the assembling of the pens used to pen rear chinook salmon and steelhead/rainbow trout on Oak Orchard River. This project helps to insure a good return of these great fish to our tributaries in the fall and helps to maintain a world-class fishery. To help out, you have to do is to show up at Lake Breeze, Marina 990 Point Breeze Road at 8 a.m. on April 6.Edit Module
