Southwest Minnesota Fishing Report - April 12th, 2013

Posted on April 11, 2013

FAIRMONT AREA

The only ice that remains was floating and most lakes were completely ice-free as of Tuesday morning. There hasn’t been much open-water fishing pressure this week, but it is an option throughout the area.

MANKATO AREA

The ice-fishing season has ended as some lakes are completely ice-free and others will be soon. The only open-water bite worth noting is taking place for catfish on the Minnesota River. The traditional spring crappie spots have yet to start producing fish.

ORTONVILLE AREA

Anglers were walking out and using ATVs early this week on Big Stone Lake, although that could change by this weekend. There’s still a lot of ice on the lake, but this area was expected to receive quite a bit of snow. Perch action remains strong around Goose Island and the Peninsula in 10 to 12 feet during midday hours and should continue as long as the lake is accessible.

WILLMAR AREA

Some of the accesses are getting beat up, but walking or ATVs remained an option on all lakes early this week. Despite that, fishing pressure has been minimal with a few anglers hitting the west side of Willmar Lake, the northeast corner of Green Lake, Diamond Lake, and Nest Lake for crappies and sunfish in 15 to 20 feet.
