Southern Illinois Fishing Report - April 5th, 2013

Crab Orchard Lake

Anglers were catching some crappies, but rains and heavy winds have slowed fishing considerably. Most crappies are still holding over deeper cover on minnows and jigs. Some anglers were also taking some bluegills near the rip rap on a variety of baits. Catfish action is still slow.

Carlyle Lake

Anglers are starting to take some catfish on nightcrawlers and cut shad. Crappies are rated good in the brush piles. Most fish are holding in 2-4 feet of water. Jigs are the primary bait. In the tailwater, white bass and crappies are rated very good. Crappies are being caught on minnows and jigs. White bass anglers are reporting success on tube jigs, minnows and curlytails. Catfish action is improving on shad, shad gut and nightcrawlers. Saugers are also rated good on curlytails tipped with minnows or nightcrawlers.

Kinkaid Lake

Bluegills are being caught in 4-6 feet of water on red wigglers and wax worms. Crappies are holding in 6-10 feet of water. Fishing is rated fair to good. Minnows and jigs are both effective. Bass are slow to fair. Muskie fishing has been good. Most fish are being caught by trolling or on shallow running baits. Water temperature is about 56 degrees.

Rend Lake

Catfishing is rated excellent on cut shad, shad gut, nightcrawlers, minnows and stinkbaits. The best action has been in shallow bays. Crappies are rated good on jigs and minnows. Good numbers of fish are being caught in water ranging from 3-14 feet along Route 154. Fish are holding in brush piles. Bass and bluegills are rated slow. Some bass are being caught on crankbaits, soft plastics and Rat-L-Traps along the rip rap or in weedbeds.

Lake of Egypt

Crappie action has been good in 18-20 feet. Fish are holding over brush piles. Fish in the 1- to 2- pound range are being taken on minnows and jigs. Bass are rated very good on a variety of baits. Bass are carrying eggs and will be spawning soon.
