Unusual warm, dry weather leaves streams low - Southwest Region
Buffalo Creek (Armstrong County)
Anglers were catching trout on Sucker Spawn, Glo-Bugs, Woolly Buggers, Hare’s Ear Nymphs and Trout Magnets in the delayed-harvest, artificial-lures-only section.
Allegheny River (Armstrong County)
Small walleyes and smallmouth bass were released at the locks and dams and mouths of tributaries.
Green Lick Dam (Fayette County)
Shore and boat anglers caught decent numbers of crappies around 9 inches in the mid weather of late March, with minnow- or wax worm-tipped jigs taking fish. Bluegills also were reported.
Youghiogheny River (Fayette County)
Releases of smallmouth bass were reported on minnows and spinners from Connellsville to Dawson.
Dunlap Lake, Dunlap Creek, Virgin Run Dam (Fayette County)
Trout were reported in these Early Season Stocked Trout Program waters. Releases of trout also were reported in the catch-and-release fly-fishing only section of Dunbar Creek. Try nymphs.
Laurel Hill Lake, Laurel Hill Creek (Somerset County)
Nice releases of trout were reported in the lake before it closed in preparation for trout season. The creek’s delayed-harvest, artificial- lures-only section was yielding releases of trout.
Lake Somerset (Somerset County)
Despite the partial draw-down, nice catches of crappies, bass and catfish were reported. The lower water has been concentrating fish.
Quemahoning Reservoir (Somerset County)
Bass and northern pike were hitting in this reservoir near Johnstown.
Loyalhanna Creek (Westmoreland County)
A nice trout bite on flies and spinners was reported in the delayed- harvest, artificial-lures-only section.
Acme Dam (Westmoreland County)
Nice numbers of bluegills and a few yellow perch were reported on crawlers or waxworms in recent weeks, but the crappie bite was slow.
Donegal Lake, Mammoth Lake, upper and lower Twin lakes (Westmoreland County)
A slow trout bite was reported. Crappies hadn’t turned on by the end of March.
Cross Creek Lake (Washington County)
A decent crappie bite was reported with anglers jigging minnows off the bottom under bobbers.
Raccoon Lake (Beaver County)
Trout were reported along with hit or miss action on bluegills.
Yellow Creek Lake (Indiana County)
Panfish were hitting along with a few northern pike.
Ohio River
Catfish were hitting in recent weeks. Try chicken livers.
