With lack of DNR funds, Winnebago County lake project on hold

LOVES PARK, Ill. — Plans by the state of Illinois to dredge Olson Lake in northern Illinois, so that it can be reopened as a swimming lake and beach, are now on hold.

The (Rockford) Register Star recently reported that the Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced plans for the Rock Cut State Park lake in Winnebago County lake weeks after the same agency announced that it would close the lake this year because of warming water temperatures and siltation.

Now, the agency reportedly says it doesn’t have the necessary funding and offered no timetable for the project.

Last month’s announcement caught state Rep. John Cabello of Machesney Park by surprise, according to the Register Star report. Cabello said he would work to get the lake fixed and reopened — leading to a recent IDNR news release about the plans to dredge and reopen the lake, which now have been shelved.
