Northwest Minnesota Fishing Report – January 11th, 2013


Crappies and sunfish are biting in 10 to 12 feet on Lake Le Homme Dieu and Lake Mary. On Lake Carlos, there’s some evening crappie action over 30 feet with minnows. Walleye reports have slowed, although shiner minnows are producing fish in 25 to 30 feet on Lake Miltona and Lake Ida.

Walleyes are biting on Pelican Lake near Ashby, West Battle Lake in 26 to 32 feet, and Otter Tail Lake in nine to 13 feet or 20 to 25 feet. Sunfish and crappies continue to hit in 10 to 15 feet on Stalker Lake, South Turtle Lake, and Ellingson Lake. Sucker minnows are the ticket for northern pike in 15 to 20 feet on Otter Tail, South Turtle, and North Turtle Lake.

Crappies are hitting during low-light periods at Little Detroit Lake in 12 to 14 feet or in 17 feet on Severson Lake, Deadshot Bay, Middle Cormorant Lake, and Sour Lake. Big Detroit Lake, Lake Sallie, Lake Melissa, Big Cormorant Lake, and Pelican Lake are producing walleyes in 20 to 30 feet and setlines seem to be producing more fish. Northern pike remain active on most lakes, while Little Detroit, Deadshot Bay, Melissa, Sour, and Severson Lake are kicking out bluegills around green weeds in 12 to 15 feet.

Walleyes are hitting during the evening hours in 14 to 20 feet on Potato Lake, Upper Twin Lake, Fish Hook Lake, and Long Lake. Crappies continue to hit throughout the Crow Wing Chain early and late each day, while bluegill action remains strong in 12 to 14 feet at Fish Hook, Upper Twin, Lower Twin Lake, and Long. Tip-ups and sucker minnows are producing northern pike in 14 to 18 feet on Big Mantrap Lake and Fish Hook.

Walleyes can be had with shiner minnows or spoons and minnow heads in 24 feet at Little Pine Lake or 17 to 28 feet at Rush Lake. Crappie action has picked up at Star Lake in 20 feet and you’ll find bluegills in 10 to 20 feet on Dead Lake and Lake Marion. Northern pike reports have been strong on all lakes with tip-ups and sucker minnows.
