Central Wisconsin Fishing Report – January 11th, 2012

The ice fishing is just starting in Door County. Little Sturgeon has been one of the only spots so far that has had fairly safe and walkable ice. Fishermen were reporting 2 to 5 inches of ice on the inner bay of Little Sturgeon. Perch fishing has been decent, with some nice catches of good-sized perch, with lots of smaller fish in the mix. Medium and large shiners and wax worms have been the baits of choice. Pike fishermen also are having pretty good success. Large and medium golden shiners under tip-ups has been the best method. Some fishermen have been targeting pike in the Sturgeon Bay ship canal, with fair action. In and around the marinas seems to be the places for the best action. Kangaroo Lake in northern Door County has been producing panfish and some good numbers of pike on golden shiners under tip-ups.

Fishermen are catching a lot of whitefish off Bayshore Park on 6 to 8 inches of ice. Guys are catching pike through the ice on University Bay. At Voyager Park in De Pere, anglers are catching crappies and bluegills.

Ice conditions are good. There was 6 to 10 inches on Lake Onalaska last week, and guys were fishing all of the way from Stoddard to Lake Onalaska and everywhere in between. The fish seem to be deeper this year, no matter where you fish. Something has driven them to deeper water.

Fishermen were catching a few walleyes heading into last week, but action picked up as the weather warmed. The landings on Lake Poygan are in good shape.

Ice conditions are improving on the Petenwell Flowage, and so is the fishing. Early last week, anglers saw a marked increase in walleye action, but many of the fish were in the protected slot. Anglers were releasing 26- and 27-inch walleyes.
