L.P. walleye opener slow, but trout fishing is good – Northern LP Report
East Jordan Area
Opening weekend of the inland fishing season in the Lower Peninsula was slow, with low temperatures prevailing. Brook trout fishing has been good on the Jordan River and all the tributary streams. Walleye fishing has been good in the south arm and the main basin of Lake Charlevoix. Crankbaits fished in 6 to 8 feet of water after dark are producing good results. Turkey hunting has been good, but hunting pressure has been light. White morels are popping.

Trout fishing has been good on the Manistee and Boardman rivers and other streams in and around Kalkaska County. Some of the smaller streams are low, but others are in good shape. Inland lake fishing has been slow, and fishing pressure has been light. Turkey numbers are up and hunters report success. Morels are popping.

The inland lake fishing opener was slow. A couple walleyes were caught on Mitchell Lake, but low water temperatures kept anglers away. A few small pike have been caught, too. Turkey hunting has been fair and hunting pressure light. A few morels have been found. With warm weather and rain in the forecast, more should be popping this week.

Trout fishing was good on the opener on the Pine River, and fishing pressure was high. Pike and crappies have been caught on Rose Lake. Bluegills and sunfish are in the shallows on most lakes in the area. Turkey hunting has been good in Osceola County, and hunters are reporting success. Mushroom hunters report finding good numbers of both black and white morels.

Higgins Lake Area
Fishing pressure has been light, with heavy rain keeping anglers off Higgins Lake. A few lake trout had been caught before the adverse weather moved in. Turkey hunting has been fair, but turkey numbers are down. Black morels are popping.

Hubbard Lake Area
The L.P. walleye opener was slow on Hubbard Lake with low water and high winds leading to light fishing pressure. Those anglers who did venture out reported catching decent numbers of walleyes on stickbaits trolled behind planer boards in 13 feet of water. Turkey hunting has been slow, with light bird numbers in the area. Morels are popping.

Walleye fishing has been decent in Lake Huron’s Thunder Bay and in the Thunder Bay River below the Ninth Street Dam. A few steelhead also have been caught in the river. Turkey hunting has been good in Alpena County. A lot of 20-pound-plus gobblers are being killed. Morels are starting to pop.
