Jeremy Trotta (left) of Castleton caught this 18" crappie while fishing in the Bailey Mt. Fish and Game Club four lake ice fishing derby. It is longer than the current State record, but it did not have the weight to surpass that mark. His friend Dan Rosenthal had to help open the iced in hole to retrieve the fish. The current record holder was also fishing the same event and when he saw it, thought his record had been broken. Ironically, Jeremy's father was caught in the same length/weight situation a couple years ago with a brook trout. The fish has been registered with DEC for their Achievement Award.
While Fishing for Walleyes near Dunkirk NY in lake Erie, My brother in law Mark Catanzaro of Hanford Bay NY and Myself, landed this 33 Inch 22.8 LB lake Trout. The fish hit a Copper blade worm harness in a single harness blade hook and we had 12LB test on the level wind Penn GTI reel. I had the down rigger set at 65 Feet in 90 feet of water. Due to the hard North East wind of 17 knots we decided to let him run and go with wind. Slowly we wore the fish down after 3 major runs, I reach out with a too small Walleye net, grabbed his gill and scooped with the net and pulled him onto the boat floor. In total amazement I told him that is the largest fish I have ever caught in Lake Erie. Luckily I had my larger cooler and was able to squeeze him in. we celebrated with a couple cold beers and headed in. Mark is getting his trophy lake trout mounted. What a great day of fishing. That's why we get up at 3 am.
